When getting backlinks, mind the nofollow attribute on your links. This attribute marks the links as “not trusted” and tells the search engines to discount them as a vote. That means you get no SEO benefit from them.
However, that doesn’t mean that search engines don’t “see” nofollow links as many people think. And there’s a big difference between invisibility and discounting. Even though there’s no value to ranking, there is value to indexing. This concerns social bookmarks more than anything.
Social bookmarks are often used “to get the site out there” and get it indexed. But many social bookmarking sites add the nofollow attribute to the links. Nontheless they still matter simply because of the indexing effect they have.
