Did you know that you can get hundreds or even thousands of links almost instantly by buying expired domains? This is a little known technique, by some it is considered “grey hat”.
Personally, I don’t consider it “grey hat”, on the contrary, I think it’s one of the purest white hat techniques in SEO. Of course, it depends how you go about it.

The number of outgoing links per page is an important metric. Too many links can render a backlink useless even if the PR of the page is high itself.
This is a very often overlooked aspect of link building so I feel like it deserves a dedicated post. Far too many inexperienced marketers think that PR is all that matters regardless of other metrics that a page has. Don’t underestimate the importance of link density.

20 years ago, when the Internet was not yet widespread, there were only text and images. In fact, even 5 years ago most content on the websites consisted of text and images only exclusively, with some very low quality video and audio on rare site.
A lot has changed in the past 5 years. Youtube was born and it took the online experience to a whole new level. The videos have become widespread and now not a day passes by when you don’t see a video somewhere online.

Who said that your content should be posted only once in one form on your site or someone else’s site? While posting the same article across many sites may not have the desired effect (you may stumble upon duplicate content issues as the number of copies grows), reusing the same content in different formats can be a great way to get backlinks.

When it comes to link building, quality is what matters most. I don’t buy the “any link is a good link” notion. Your time is limited and the last thing you want is wasting it to get useless backlinks.
Social bookmarks if used incorrectly are ones of those kinds of links that border with useless. What good is a link from a page with potentially 100s of outgoing links or from a page buried deep deep down the hierarchy of the site? Your time is better spent getting quality links than spamming social bookmarking sites.

There are techniques that you can do to get backlinks and there are techniques that you must do. RSS feeds are definitely a must. It takes little time and you get set for constant flood of backlinks from very diverse traffic sources.

Dropping a link somewhere doesn’t end at it. That especially holds true with web 2.0 properties, articles directories, videos, etc. Getting a link from a page on a sites, as big as it is, holds very little value as far as SEO. To get more value out of these links, you have to promote them.

When getting backlinks, mind the nofollow attribute on your links. This attribute marks the links as “not trusted” and tells the search engines to discount them as a vote. That means you get no SEO benefit from them.
